    Automatic lathes are a a type of lathe that is controlled automatically. These first originated in the 1870s, with a variety of programmability, followed by more modern CNC turning machines in the 1950s/60s. Traditional mechanical lathes are no longer being built, but there are still fully functional examples still in operation around the world.

    Single Spindle Automatic Lathe

    Automatic lathes may hold one spindle or multiple spindles. A single spindle automatic lathe machine works on one item at a time. However, the machine has multiple tools to cut and modify the spindle in sequence, arranged in several axes. For example, the lathe will use tools to shape the piece as required, drill holes, the piece is cut off and the spindle fed through to repeat the process.

    Multi Spindle Automatic Lathe

    These machines are similar to the single spindle machine, but can work on multiple spindles simultaneously. Most models use a six-spindle configuration, and commonly resemble a Gatling Gun.

    Chucking Automatic Lathe

    Chuck lathes are a variant of machine specifying in handling larger work, typically chucking work rather than bar feeding and can handle blanks up to 300mm in diameter. Chuck lathes are air-operated and most machines are built to handle more than one item at a time. Due to the size of the machine and purpose, these chucking automatic lathes are relatively rare in the workplace, slowly being replaced by more advanced CNC machines.
