EDM Wire Machines Explained

Wire EDM machines are used to cut and shape materials such as tungsten that are too hard for other machines to work with. Known as wire electrical discharge machining (EDM), the process works by creating sparks between a brass wire and a workpiece - both electrically conductive – which erode the material. The Workings of an EDM

In a EDM wire device, the material to be worked on is submerged in a tank of dielectric fluid. When the machine is running, a current is applied to the workpiece and brass wire, and they are continually brought together to create sparks. The brass wire is positioned to usually within 0.004mm of accuracy by diamond guides above and below. For most used wire EDM solutions, the guides are CNC controlled, and the upper guide can move in z-u-v directions for creating transitional and tapered shapes.
